Contradiction in Skip Alston RECALL Story
January 29, 2010 – 10:52 amScooper Jordan Green says of Alston in his original story:
“Alston also denied mentioning a possible recall initiative.”
Amanda and Joe report today:
“Alston said he mentioned a recall election to the mayor as one of a number of possible results…”
Gibson, Shaw, Davis, Cashion, or Perkins would make an excellent Chairman of the Guilford County Board Of Commissioners.

What I wrote came directly from a conversation with Alston and Amanda called to ask the question again a few hours later, to be sure we had it right.
He said he did mention recall — but not as a threat, just to pass on information about what could happen, to spell out some possible consequences.
What he might have said to Jordan I can’t say.

Jordan blurs the line way to much; but then so does John Hammer. Skip and his close friends have profited tremendously the past few years. He still has a way to go before he can play with the other Melvin.

I would mention another difference in the Yes! and N&R stories: Mayor Knight told me Mr. Alston mentioned a recall election. He told Jordan he remembered the word “recall,” but thought it was in reference to something else.
This might be a case of Knight and Vaughan coming to an agreement about what they remember of the conversation, days later.

Thanks for your comments today Joe and Amanda.
Amanda, miss you at the buffet. Guess it’s boring news when there’s no AC debate, lol.
Don, I don’t believe this specific contradiction, with totally opposite statements, is blurry. Have you been paying for parking and buying plenty of popcorn as I requested?

I looked back at my notes, and unfortunately they don’t include Skip’s specific words on the matter of a recall. I do recall vividly that Skip’s general response to questions about specific actions the “community” might undertake was denial. I guess it could be that his recollection changed from one interview to the next, or he was telling me that, no, he didn’t personally threaten Bill and Nancy with a recall, in which case I was in error. In any case, he seems be owing up to it now.

Jordan:
I wouldn’t be surprised if his recollection was different when he talked to you. Everyone in the meeting’s recollections seem to have been at least a little in flux judging by the differences in our story, your story and the Rhino story.
That sometimes happens, especially when who said exactly what becomes so potentially explosive.

I appreciate your excellent work on this story Jordan, Joe, and Amanda.
