New City Council, Aquatics Center, and High Point Rd.
December 3, 2009 – 1:43 amSome random thoughts on current events:
Before we build another structure on High Point Road let’s change the name of the road. With the state’s help we can stop promoting our step sister city who couldn’t care less if we got invited to Thanksgiving dinner. A name change would compliment renovation. When I mentioned this before Robbie Perkins said it would be costly for merchants to change their printed materials.
Speaking of Robbie Perkins he confronted me during a recess last night and asked if I was Tony Wilkins. I confirmed and he said I was the guy who kept calling him a RINO. I confirmed again and stated that description was based on his voting record. The man without a party said he didn’t vote with the crazy people. He didn’t elaborate on why he kept the (R) affiliation if he thought (R)’s were crazy people. A likable and knowledgeable political novelty, Perkins had no future in furniture commercials. Nancy Vaughan mediated the exchange.
Vaughan mediates well as she would later in the council meeting. She wants “ownership of the decision” on the Aquatic Center as she should have. I see many 5-4 decisions in the future with Vaughan being the deciding vote. I find comfort in that based on my confidence in Vaughan’s leadership.
The 4:00 public hearing was not complimentary to the new council. If previous members wanted Mike Barber to be involved and see his project through they could have named the Aquatic Center after him. Danny Thompson responds to being slighted, no reason to wait. Again, I predict Nancy Vaughan will make the final decision on the Aquatic Center.
For the first five minutes of the meeting with new council I thought Zack Matheny was mayor.
TDBS wants to be sure she can swim in the new cement pond. That’s sure to include a fashion statement and a lot of unnecessary talking from the self acclaimed senior member of council. Seniority must account for her being the only member to keep her seat from last year. Mike got accused of taking her microphone but I’m wondering if Rashad took it in an effort to shorten the meetings.
Joe Guarino has an interesting post on the evening.
John Robinson is so predictable. He prints the first of many jabs at a conservative council.
Bills Knight and Burckley should report to the principal’s office to be reminded they’re on the same team. Both men are tremendous assets to this community and we’re all better off if any brewing feud stops now. Gentlemen, share your toys, abilities, and compassion for Greensboro and let’s move forward.

Due respect, that wasn’t a jab at a conservative council. That was a jab at politicians who campaign on civility and at their first meeting get into an argument. Conservatism had nothing to do with it.
You say predictable, I say consistent. I took lots of jabs at the previous councils, too.

#1. Can someone tell me how could the so called experts miss the amount of money voted on by the voters on the bond, and miss it my MILLIONS of dollars. #2. In your opinion, do you think this was done on purpose?
I have never seen this addressed on any blog or newspaper.
If anyone knows, please advise on this blog so it may be made public.
Thanking you in advance!

cm, I had to look back on the tape to make sure I wasn’t dreamin’. It was much fun. Too bad Keith had to pee and got trapped outside. He could have joined in.
