Robbie Perkins Tries To Silence Fellow Council Members
May 5, 2009 – 1:41 am
Maybe there will be a perfectly good explanation Tuesday night from Dictator Robbie Perkins on his attempt to silence council members from using the Greensboro website and Channel 13 to communicate with constituents.
Memorandum
- To: Mayor and City Council
- From: Bob Morgan, Interim City Manager
- Date: May 4, 2009
- Subject: Resolution-using public media facility for council press conferences
I received a request this afternoon from Councilmember Robbie Perkins which he asked me to inform you of as soon as possible. Councilmember Perkins requested we prepare a resolution for Council consideration tomorrow which requires an affirmative vote of Council to utilize public media facilities (web-site, Channel 13, etc) when airing press conferences held by Council Members.
It has been our practice to air press conferences held by any Councilmember on the city’s web-site and on Channel 13. The press conference would typically air through the subsequent week and weekend (subject to availability of air time).
The resolutions will be in Council’s packet tomorrow evening.

Hmmm. I don’t know. I have mixed feelings on this. I can see how the coverage could be abused (not saying it has been) during a campaign — giving an incumbent an advantage. I’m not sure though that requiring a vote by council is the way to go either — that also leaving the door open for political abuse.

I don’t believe he’ll have the votes to adopt this resolution but he may have some angle that I’m just not aware of.
Right now I’m suspect of his motives.
