Greensboro War Memorial Commission
September 9, 2008 – 10:59 amCity Councilwoman Trudy Wade recently appointed me to the Board of the Greensboro War Memorial Commission and last Thursday I received a warm welcome to my first meeting.
I was cited for bringing “energy” to the Board. Please, no one tell my wife I have energy. She’ll make me mow again.
Tim Rice was elected Chairman and Mike Bumpass was elected Vice-Chairman. Zack Matheny is the city council liason.
Other new members were Richard Beard and Florence Gatten.
Even as a rookie I’ve already advocated for a Bob Dylan concert. I estimated he would draw 7,000 to 8,000. The man is 67 years old and I don’t expect him to continue touring much longer.
I look forward to serving and hope I can be effective.

Congrats, I am a city voter and supporter. I hope the bond issues pass. I believe the WMA and CVM complex in general are a great asset to The City.
However, this seems quite a departure from your posts on Park and Rec bond. I wont trouble anyone with quotes but I do await your comments with antici………….
………… pation.
Seriously, thank you for your community service!

I thought that question may show up here Mick. The above link is for informational purposes only which is all the city is legally able to provide. At quick glance it seems a much broader purpose is served by the auditorium to a larger number of participants such as concerts, conventions, meetings, and student plays.
I’ll provide information as I receive it. I’ll post, you decide.
“The proposed retrofit will not cater to the needs of one select group of citizens, but rather enhance a venue that will continue to offer a wide range of cultural arts and entertainment for people of all ages and backgrounds. The retrofit will ensure that future generations will have a modern facility that will continue to host recitals, plays, concerts, lectures and a wide array of events that appeal to all segments of Greensboro’s diverse community.”

Agreed, but it also costs 3-4 times as much. But I think it is a needed component of the city. I believe the CVM and WMA provide services and economic impacts far beyond the “red ink” often touted here and elsewhere.
I just wish you would apply the same logic to the P&R bonds you have apparently applied to WMA. That is all. Dont get me wrong …. I’m with you on this. But some of your earlier comments, particularly about needed police or our current economy, seem to put you at odds with the task at hand. Seems curious. But I am glad you are participating at this very high level of community service. Cool
Good luck
BTW: I will be voting yes for WMA as well as P&R.

It very well may be a diverse cross section of the community that benefits from it, but it’s a tiny cross section nonetheless. If it’s to be funded by property taxes, I’m not voting for it period. The straw and camel’s back come to mind and we’re heaping a lot of straw it seems every election now.

Tony, Congrats! Maybe some new blood with some fresh ideas since the P&R has been stuck on the same failing idea and getting a loud but apparent not clear NO! for an answer with every bond referendum.
The reason I have heard most often for not voting for the WMS bond is that the proverbial “they” want to tear it all down and build a modern thing. People want to keep the WMS as much like the original as possible while restoring and making improvements that are needed like more restrooms and that sort of thing.
Greensboro seems hell bent to tear down all of its history. The WMS is a very important part of that history. BB

Brenda,
Every City P&R bond has passed. What are you referring to?
You do understand it is the War Memorial AUDITORIUM with a $50 million dollar bond referendum on the November ballot not the stadium on Yanceyville… right?
By Mick on Sep 11, 2008
Correct Mick. Brenda, the stadium falls under P&R. War Memorial Commission relates to the coliseum and auditorium.
By Tony Wilkins on Sep 11, 2008
I guess the failed Stadium bond is a P&R bond that failed. Probably a few more then I guess. So I will amend my comment to “Almost every … Nearly all… the vast majority… blah”

You will be a asset, they could not have got a better person for the job….Congradulations

I am sorry gentlemen, I did confuse the two in this comment. And I do know better. Sometimes this weary old brain vaporizes. Usually happens when I am passionately involved with a similarly named issue as I am in my desired to see the War Memorial Stadium restored. BB

For what the complex charges for parking, the crappers should have gold seats.
