Brief notes from today’s WMC meeting…

Florence Gatten was unanimously elected as the Commission’s first female Chair. MacArthur Davis was elected as Vice-Chair. Former Chairman Mike Bumpass was showered with deserved accolades for his WMC leadership role over the past year and his accomplishments in the promotion of our city. I expect to see his name on a ballot sometime in the near future.

I cast my vote for Gatten after I confirmed with coliseum staff that officers were not elected on a commission seniority status so as not to insult members that had been on the commission longer than Gatten. Florence should make an exceptionally dedicated and aggressive leader on this commission.

The “VIP Lounge” will now be called “The Terrace” and is on track to be completed by February 15th.

$22M worth of construction is underway on the coliseum grounds. Lots of jobs. Lots of Stamey’s BBQ sandwiches. Lots of Ghassan’s steak and cheeses. Probably a few Biff-Burgers.

Check out the coliseum’s website for updated show listings. Buy tickets, pay to park, buy popcorn for your row and enjoy.

The system counts each item loaded on a Web page as a hit so some pages may have several hits each time the page is loaded. With the release of v.5.1.1 (they are talking about firmware), the hit counter does not count each image as a hit, which dramatically reduces the number of hits per page, making it much more useful as an indicator of Web surfing activity.

Two anonymous sources have confirmed that from July 23 to August 23 over 21,000 visits to pornographic websites occurred at the Greensboro PUBLIC library. Emphasis on PUBLIC.

Over 700 per day.

Even using Ed Cone’s estimate of one person going to 15 sites that’s 46 people. Per day. Also using Ed’s rough math that would indicate that 7% of library patrons are there for the hoochy koochy show made available with your tax dollars.

On a side note one of those sources stated that Sandy Neerman told council members that bandwidth shaping is not blocking and is not filtering.

Unless I’m mistaken Kathy Hartsell has confirmed that current software has the ability to block the very same sites that were “slowed” at no additional costs to the taxpayers.

I owe you some tacos Ed.

More to come.

There is a lot of chatter at the Ed Cone and Joe Guarino blog about the issue of porn in the public libraries.

The report given to council stated there were 18 cases of porn viewers gettin’ jiggy widdit in a six month period. Three per month.

The council has requested a printout of specific porn searching clicks. The availability of this informative report was made by Kathy Hartsell at the latest council meeting. Hartsell has brought many interesting facts to light on this issue including being able to block porn sites at no additional costs to taxpayers with current software despite library trustees assertion that costs would be as much as $20,000 (ref N&R 8-21-10).

The game in this post is to guess the average numbers of porno clicks per day which should be revealed when the report is given to council. Here’s my guess and my reasoning. 9AM-9PM, 12 hours, about maybe 2 or 3 an hour…I’m guessing 36 per day.

You can simply state OVER 36 or UNDER 36 or make your own number prediction. For those of you who say the number doesn’t matter…hogwash. Play along anyway ’cause playing <strike>with</strike> by one’s self just isn’t as much fun.

Ryan Shell Seriously man, I’m becoming more and more dissapointed. Since you’ve become a politician you’ve become a different person. Your blog is about food and the passionate post (other than the recent kiss about grass and trash) have gone away. I may have changed teams last year, but I didn’t change my step, or beliefs. Hope …the real Tony Wilkins will return some day.

Amanda Lehmert Ouch! You gonna take that Mr. Wilkins?

Ryan Shell Amanda, am I wrong? Tony knows I’m a friend, but friends call each other out. Losing the passion, or letting it appear that way, is virtually the same as abandoning the element that gained the interest of others. Now… where did I put that soapbox?

Keith Brown some of us miss the old tony

Amanda Lehmert But do more people like the new Tony? That is the crucial question I think.

Tony Wilkins That passion is still there Ryan, more than ever. I am a bit surprised at the amount of comments I’m hearing (even from people that I would not suspect read blogs) about a recent slow down on posting. Give me a call and let’s chat…if it can be known that you’re friends with a Red Sox fan.

Ryan Shell Amanda, if people don’t like the old Tony then they don’t like Tony Wilkins. Are you suggesting that it is good for politicians to put up their best front in a form of trickery to get elected? Tony, hiding passion isn’t a good thing. Want t…o make a difference? Figure out why that section of road highlighted on your blog was allowed to get in such bad shape. Then, when you figure that out head over to District 2 and ask the same questions. Making a difference and getting things done can be much more rewarding than simply becoming a politician. And besides, Greensboro doesn’t need another Danny Thompson. Keep it real.

What may be problematic is the fact this could be property the state has purchased for the widening of High Point Road. It may also be in the county as it certainly is near the city/ county border. Regardless, I will seek remedy.

Unlike any other post you’ve ever seen here? I’m furious, but let me continue.

These are explicit titles of adult movies that Time Warner Cable has so far decided that you can not block from your new programming guide. They are available for anyone in your family to see, and they’re just past the HBO On Demand selection.

A forty minute phone conversation with a TWC customer service rep, an engineer, and a supervisor yielded the following information concerning channels 771 to 788:

The “Block Title” feature that was previously available has been disabled on the new guide, even using parental controls. TWC is tracking inquiries and keeping a tally of complaints on this issue. They can not give any information as to when or if the feature will be available again.

A very cordial CSR, who seemed surprised when she found the feature disabled stated, “I even blush when I read those titles”.

Maybe a minor gripe in the overall scheme of things but I have to hope this type of stupidity doesn’t someday cause this to happen to me.

I’ll begin a barrage of complaints on Tuesday and update this post (and probably edit) if there is any positive solution. If you feel the same way I do I hope you’ll let TWC know.

Update: Before lunch today my city council representative had been in touch with the president of TWC’s office in New York concerning this matter. My conversation with them convinced me they were trying to resolve the matter which they stated was a software problem. They could not give me a time line for solution. Too bad the local folks don’t know what’s going on.

Conversation at Ed Cone’s.

Update2: Mission accomplished. Apparently this has been a problem for about three weeks or so. Not positive they’ve worked out all the kinks but…TITLES BLOCKED!
